Trentham to Upper Hutt (T2UH) involved double tracking of 2.7 km of the Hutt Valley line between Trentham and Upper Hutt stations to enable trains to travel in both directions at the same time and deliver more frequent and reliable services.

Trentham to Upper Hutt

As a young woman, with only four years’ experience in infrastructure, Cooms says, “I don’t feel I am treated differently because I’m female. The perspective wahine bring on site adds an alternate viewpoint to the project team – not better, just different. Women can be more empathetic and willing to listen or collaborate within a team.”

Cooms believes the support she received from leaders has directly contributed to her career progression to a supervisor role: “Positive mentoring and coaching helped me navigate some challenging times. My managers’ have highlighted strengths in me that I had not recognised in myself. Downer helps people find their niche. It’s such a diverse sector – you can find your area to shine.”

Current Vacancies

The PACE Project involves a complete upgrade of Plimmerton Station north of Wellington, including three main and nine new turnouts, a new platform/shelter, pedestrian underpass extension and all associated overhead line equipment (OLE), signalling and drainage. The upgrades are required to enable an enhanced timetable to be implemented as a part of the Future Rail upgrades in Wellington.

Three years ago, Tim Boon was working as a Kayak Instructor in Northern Queensland, with plans to kayak in Norway for six months, and then dog sled for the rest of the year - but when COVID hit at the end of 2020, his travel plans began to unravel.

Tim then joined Downer through our Road Ready programme, in Nelson. Moving quickly up the ranks, he passed his Traffic Management Planner Assessment on the first go and is now the third fully qualified TTM Planner in the Tasman region.
