Our Purpose is to create and sustain a modern environment by building trusted relationships with our customers. Our Promise is to work closely with our customers to help them succeed, using world-leading insights and solutions.

To deliver our promise, we put people first – we’re building a place where everyone can thrive and make a difference. We are committed to develop our future leaders and we offer a range of career, wellbeing, and diversity initiatives to help them learn, grow, and contribute to the community.

What you’ll get

We understand how important health and wellbeing is to a balanced lifestyle and we empower our people with means to support their own mental health and wellbeing, but also support their families, and mates. Here are few examples of what we provide:

  • Our national mental first aid officers programme enables employees to be trained to provide initial informal support to other employees in the workplace
  • They complement our Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) that also covers immediate family members 24/7
  • Our people have the opportunity to plan their own wellbeing journey with our Helping Hands programme while we support them with the funds they need to get there.
  • Everyone at Downer is also offered a free health check-upflu shot and workplace assessment once a year.

We pride ourselves on having a strong safety culture because we care about our people and our communities. We remain focused on ensuring that all our people return home safely to their families at the end of their working day.

Diversity and inclusion

Our people are fundamental to maintain our workplace culture that is diverse, inclusive, and dynamic which allows each person to bring their most authentic selves to work every day.

Downer is proud to be Rainbow Tick certified and is also an active member of Diversity Works

We believe our differences are the backbone of our strengths. And a range of specific programmes have been created to support people coming from various background, and to ensure Māori and women leadership development.

With Own’d, our recognition programme, we celebrate our people who have owned the difference they bring to our team and have made a difference in one of our four pillars – Safety, Delivery, Relationships and Thought Leadership. We also celebrate long service employees.

Learning and development

Learning and development

Employees enjoy >50 learning, development, and training courses from entry level to general management with our personalised Learning and Development programme.
A strong focus is put on internal promotion and mobility. Our size, our people, our numerous locations in New Zealand, and diverse areas of expertise all present opportunities for employees to pursue their professional and personal development and fulfil their ambitions.

Something extra…

We’ve also got something extra for all permanent employees. Here are some of our favourites:

Our perks offer great discounts for popular retailers and important services. Access to more than 40 discount offers (healthcare, gyms, travel, vehicle maintenance, technology, home renovations, insurance etc.) – this includes a 50% subsidy on the Marram Trust membership providing holiday accommodation and healthcare benefits.

Flexible working

We are committed to creating a dynamic work environment which inspires people and allows them to best integrate work with other important things in their life. We help our people achieve this with flexible working. Depending on your role, we offer a range of flexible working options including flexible hourspart-time arrangements, and flexible locations.

Support for parents In line with our company philosophy to support families, we offer comprehensive return-to-work benefits for those returning from parental leave, including flexible working options (e.g. work four days a week paid five for a 12-week period) and additional financial support.
Volunteering & giving back
One way we support communities is through our paid volunteer day. Many of us are actively involved in sports clubs, schools, local community groups, charities, and environmental causes. The Downer Delights initiative encourages employees to nominate a cause they care about. In 2021, we gave back $50,000 to 30 charities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
